The indoor and outdoor designs of houses are the most important factor when visualising the outcome of a building and decoration process. As the outdoors are usually visible to the guests, the decoration to the outdoors adds another level of appeal to the house.
There are two approaches that can be opted for when designing the outdoors, namely, landscaping and gardening. The former refers to visualising how the outdoor will look like and then implementing that idea to the building, which includes plants, lightening, furniture for open environment, shelter and other variables as well. In contrast to this, gardening is focused towards the plants and plantation in any environment, whether a house, a building or an open area.
Therefore, in summary the difference between the two is visualizing the whole environment and then working as per the idea whereas in gardening, the plants are the centre of work. Landscaping originated from the Dutch artists from 16th century, where they used the word ;Landschap’ to pin point the art of decorating the outdoor spaces.
Another difference that could be spotted between the two is that landscape architects and gardeners both can work together to decide the layout and selection of plants to be used for decoration, but only the gardeners have in-depth knowledge of which kind of plant will be useful in given conditions, how to cultivate it and take care of it. Landscape architects have the major in architecture, where they are liable to find the career in outdoor designs and decoration, whereas the gardeners hold the degree in botany or horticulture and they deep into cultivation processes and plantation processes. This makes them suitable for commercial area designs where gardening is key factor.
Landscape architects and gardeners together are a part of team for the most creative projects to carry out the most out of it. Designers visualise the environment, rather in sketches or using the computer graphics to settle, where the plant will be placed, where the borderlines will end, which colours will complement the given area, whereas the beauty of outdoor design is incomplete without proper plants and this is where the botanical gardeners come in handy. There can also be some exterior design elements involved, such as adding conservatories, butterfly awnings or summerhouses. It all goes hand in hand.
With the growing demand in designer houses and buildings, the minimalistic design for indoors and outdoors have become a major concern for contractors and builders as people tend to like the simple yet elegant spaces, which also increases the demand for quality outdoors that are appealing, clean yet easy to be maintained by the owners themselves. For large projects it’s not uncommon for homeowners to source a team of landscapers and gardeners, ensuring they have all aspects covered. That said, this is why it’s important to understand each of their duties so you know what you’re going to get when the work is complete. We do hope this article was helpful in finding differences between these two roles.
